Six Superfoods You Should Know About

Feb 9, 2017

Superfood: it’s a bit of a buzzword these days. There’s always some new craze in the food world, it’s hard to know what to commit to. We’ve done the research for you and here’s a list of a few of our top picks:

1. Acai

If it’s antioxidants you’re after then this is the berry for you. These wrinkly little berries look ancient but boy oh boy are they packed with the good stuff.

Just like red wine, these are high in anthocyanins: an antioxidant that is extraordinarily beneficial to heart health. This means they increase blood flow and prevent nasty things like blood clots. Alongside this they assist with; digestion, clarifying skin, increasing immunity, are anti-aging, and they improve cellular health.

2. Brazil Nuts

This one is an oldie but a goodie. Everyone knows that brazil nuts can increase longevity and are packed full of all the healthy fats.

They’re super high in selenium, a known cancer-fighter. Selenium's magical properties extend much further than preventing cancer however, it is a sign of all the good cholesterols that combat the bad cholesterols and thus make you a happy chappy. Also, aesthetically speaking, brazil nuts are high in vitamins E and C which help to prevent the aging of skin.

3. Cacao Nibs

The ole cacao huh, you getting excited at this one? Yes! It’s all the healthy parts of chocolate and it tastes just as good as a block of dark!

Cocoa nibs are super high in antioxidants, the convenient excuse you probably use to eat chocolate anyway. They're also high in fibre, potassium, magnesium and and help with cardiovascular health. So, switch out the choccie for cacao nibs and you’ll be as happy as larry, whoever he is.

4. Seaweed/ Spirulina

Seaweed eh, no we don’t mean pluck it from the ocean and fry it up but if that’s what floats your boat then go for it. We’re talking forms like nori or spirulina, both types are really high in nutrients with very little calories.

Seaweed is high in iodine, calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin B, protein, fibre, vitamins A and C and the list goes on and on and on, honestly. Chuck a teaspoon of spirulina in your morning smoothie or grab some sushi for lunch, your body will thank you for it.

5. Maca

Maca is a root related to the horseradish family, it usually comes in a powder form that can be consumed via a capsule or just as the powder. It’s full of vitamins, surprise, surprise!

This is also a great one for the ladies as it’s particularly beneficial to women's health. It assists in hormonal health and is particularly good at relieving some of the effects of menopause. Say goodbye to hot flashes and helloo to a hot new self!

6. Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are super in right now and there’s good reason why. Yes, they’re high in antioxidants, they wouldn’t feature in this list otherwise. Despite their teeny tiny appearance, they’re really high in fibre too! Not only this, they’re a great source of quality proteins.

We like to mix them into our morning oatmeal or you can make a pudding out of them! What a happy treat!

So, there you have it. Your body is a temple (you already knew this) so keep it that way. Get inventive with your powders and your potions, you'll come out of it feeling like a million bucks.
